There is very little historical data on the Moorish Science Temple as a civic organization in Newark, N.J. founded in
1913. The organization has transformed throughout the century.
The organization relocated to Chicago, IL. and eventually shed its civic role to a divine religious movement. Although it
was legally listed as the Moorish Temple of Science, it was unofficially renamed the Moorish Holy Temple of Science by
the Prophet and was used as such until 1934.
The official name was changed in accordance with the legal requirements of the Secretary of State of IL.The status
changed from civic to religious. The organization now known as the Moorish Science Temple of America became
legally chartered as a religious corporate organization in compliance with the laws of IL. Herds Rev. Stat. July 20th,
1928. This date is celebrated each year as a national holiday by all Moorish Americans.
“You, who doubt whether I, the Prophet, and my principles are not right for the redemption of my people, go to the City
Hall among the officials in your government and ask them in an intelligent tone, and they will gladly render you a
favorable reply.”
“I am a universal Prophet; membership is free all over the world.
The office of the Moorish Science Temple was located in Unity Hall, managed by Claude Greene who became a
member and achieved the title of Supreme Grand Business Manager and member of the Supreme Grand Council.
WHAT CONSTITUTES A TEMPLE
The Prophet said “Twenty-eight people who would take out membership in the Moorish Science Temple of America
and fifteen of those being initiated in the Adept Chamber of the Moorish Science temple of America, this would
constitute a Temple and of those fifteen will represent a quorum and that the majority of that quorum will be eight and
the majority can guide and govern that particular Temple.” Quote of Prophet Noble Drew Ali by Brother J. Blakely-Bey.
“THE POWER IS VESTED IN SEVEN OR MORE SHEIKS FOR THE PROTECTION OF YOUR TEMPLE AND THE DIVINE
MOVEMENT.” Prophet Noble Drew Ali
The first Temple was established in 1925. Brother E. Mealy-El was the head official of Governor as it was titled. The
title is now Grand Sheik. Brother E. Mealy-El held various positions and titles to include Chairman and Supreme Grand
Sheik all appointed by the Prophet. He also was a member of the Supreme Grand Council.
Membership flourished and firth teen Temples were established during the lifetime of the Prophet as listed from the
